International Programs and Research in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) focuses on the understanding of human beings, the groups they form, and the societies and cultures they create.

Our faculty research real world problems, ranging from homelessness and food security in the Third World to the neurological causes of Alzheimer's disease and the preservation of Native American languages. Our students and faculty address issues on the border between the United States and Mexico, as well as issues of borderlands on a global level. We have ethnic and area studies programs focused on the Middle East, Mexico and Latin America, Europe and the Far East.

Research

SBS is the home to several departments that focus on or address international issues. We have units that specialize in specific regions such as the Center for Latin American Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Near Eastern Studies, and the Southwest Center; units which do extensive field work in other countries such as anthropology, the Bureau for Applied Research in Anthropology, and geography and regional development; and other units which incorporate international issues such as communication, history, linguistics, Judaic Studies, political science, sociology, and women’s studies.

Here is a sample of research on international issues from SBS:

Our research in environment and water also incorporates many international projects:
