One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest & Panel Discussion

Co-presented by the Care, Health & Society program in the University of Arizona School of Sociology and The Loft Cinema.

Featuring a post-film panel discussion with Francisco Moreno, MD, Associate Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion and Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, University of Arizona and H. Clarke Romans, Executive Director, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Southern Arizona.

Jack Nicholson stars as counterculture hero Randle Patrick McMurphy in this highly-acclaimed adaptation of Ken Kesey’s classic novel detailing one man’s battle against an oppressive establishment … as well as the evil Nurse Ratched (memorably played by Louise Fletcher). The charismatic McMurphy is a convict who simulates mental illness in the hope that a transfer to a psychiatric hospital might ensure his early release. But what he hasn’t bargained for is the rigid regimen of Nurse Ratched, who takes a strong disliking to his disruptive – though he’d say “liberating” – effect on the ward and his fellow patients, including Christopher Lloyd, Brad Dourif, Danny DeVito and Will Sampson as the enigmatic Chief Bromden. Directed by Milos Forman (Amadeus), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest swept the 1976 Academy Awards, winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.
