Emeritus Communication Professor Dale Kunkel’s expertise on advertising to children has landed him in the news—for criticizing the advertising practices of YouTube for Kids and for his recent study on advertising food to kids.
Kunkel wants U.S. regulators to take action about YouTube for Kids, describing it as "the most hyper-commercialized media for children I have ever seen." Kunkel assisted a coalition of consumer groups in preparing the complaint to the FTC alleging that YouTube for Kids is unfair and deceptive to children. Kunkel also wrote an op-ed titled "Google gaffe: YouTube for Kids disregards rules, common sense." More info here.
In a newly released study, Kunkel found that four of every five foods advertised to children are classified in the poorest nutritional category by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines. To learn more, click here.
