Academic Policies & Forms

Our academic policies are designed to help you stay on track with your studies and, in most cases, reflect university-wide policies. If you find yourself heading into academic trouble, contact your advisor.

Grades Replacement and Appeals

If you feel you've been given a grade incorrectly, the first step is to contact your instructor to discuss the matter. If you aren't able to resolve things directly, you can consider filing a grade appeal.

You can also consider using the Grade Replacement Opportunity to raise a grade you've received in a course.

Academic Progress and Probation

All UA students are required to make sufficient academic progress. For undergraduates, this means a cumulative GPA of 2.0. Learn more about academic eligibility.

Retroactive Withdrawal from Courses

If you need to retroactively withdrawal from courses due to extenuating circumstances after the semester has ended, you'll need to file a general petition.

General Education Substitutions

In some circumstances, it may be possible to substitute a different course to meet a general education requirement. To learn more and initiate the process, see our General Education Petition.

Academic Standing

As of Fall 2019, the University of Arizona updated their Academic Eligibility policy. There are five academic statuses related to students’ eligibility to enroll in classes.

Undergraduate students who earn less than a 2.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the end of either the fall or spring semester will be placed on Academic Warning by the University. Students will be contacted via email by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) and will be required to participate in an intervention.

  1. Watch your University of Arizona email (Catmail) for a message from SBS regarding your Academic Standing
  2. If you are already enrolled in the next semester, keep your classes, but work with your academic advisor to determine if you should adjust your schedule. Discuss strategies for success and learn about academic support resources available to help you raise your GPA
  3. Complete the mandatory intervention outlined in the email

  • If you raise your cumulative GPA to a 2.0 or above, you return to Eligible status (congratulations!)
  • If you are unable to raise your GPA to 2.00 or above, you will be placed on Academic Probation

Academic Probation is the second term your cumulative GPA is below a 2.00. You will be contacted via email by the University and will be required to participate in an intervention.

  1. Watch your University of Arizona email (Catmail) for a message from the University of Arizona regarding your Academic Standing
  2. If you are already enrolled in the next semester, keep your classes, but work with your academic advisor to determine if you should adjust your schedule. Discuss strategies for success and learn about academic support resources available to help you raise your GPA
  3. Complete the mandatory intervention outlined in the email

  • If you raise your cumulative GPA to a 2.00 or above, you return to Eligible status (congratulations!)
  • If you do not raise your GPA to at least a 2.00 by the end of your Probation semester, you will be at risk of Academic Ineligibility

Academic Ineligibility means that you will not be able to enroll in classes. However, if your GPA is below a 2.00 due to extenuating circumstances, you may submit an appeal requesting an additional semester on Academic Probation. If your appeal is granted, you may enroll in classes.

The Advising Resource Center offers GPA Calculators that can help you calculate your cumulative grade point average, as well as the number of A and B courses you need to target a particular GPA.
