Mike Reader graduated from the University of Arizona in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in geological engineering. After graduation, he started working in the geotechnical engineering field in Los Angeles CA. Mike got his master’s degree in geotechnical engineering in 1989 from California State University at Long Beach. In 1991, he started his first engineering company, which he grew to about $2 million a year, at which point he merged with another geotechnical engineering company in 1998 called Group Delta Consultants. Mike became CEO of Group Delta in 2008 at the beginning of the Great Recession, which presented a lot of business challenges but also a direction for Group Delta when the market data showed that money in public works engineering was a growing field. Mike and his partner grew Group Delta to a $25 million a year company both by organic growth and by acquiring three other small engineering companies.

Many of Mike’s notable achievements include being one of the engineers of record for major projects like the $6 billion SOFI stadium, the $5 billion LAX Automated People Mover, the $2 billion Westside Subway Tunnel, and the $1 billion regional connector Subway and Deep stations.

In 2025, Mike and his partner sold Group Delta Consultants to NV5, a publicly traded engineering company. Mike currently serves as senior principal of geotechnical engineering consulting on expert engineering matters. Mike is married to his college sweetheart Betsy who was also a U of A graduate in 1985.
