We are proud of our partnership with Pima Community College right here in Tucson, AZ. While students can use the resources of AzTransfer Guide, including course equivalencies, we have provided sample PCC Transfer Plans, made by our UArizona advising team, for students considering transfer from Pima to complete a four-year undergraduate degree.
Our Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) undergraduate degrees are highly transferable, no matter your program of study at Pima. Other than the Philosophy, Politics, Economics & Law (PPEL) major, we do not have any major-specific admissions requirements for our majors. If you are accepted to UArizona as a transfer student, you can study with SBS!
AGEC Recommendation
Transfer students are STRONGLY advised to complete an AGEC (AGEC-A), which guarantees completion of general education requirements at UArizona. An AGEC comes with an Associates of Arts degree in Liberal Arts or can be completed on its own.
A University of Arizona degree is 120 units, 56 of which must be earned at a University, and cannot be transferred from a community college. It is not possible to graduate in two years unless a student is transferring 60-64 units from Pima or other institutions.
While it may be to a transfer student’s advantage to start some major foundation requirements at Pima, other than PPEL, no SBS major requires foundational major courses before transfer. You can complete your entire SBS major at UArizona – but cannot graduate in two years without 60-64 transferable units and significant progress towards general education and foundation requirements
Second Language - Requirement
All University of Arizona students are required to complete a second (foreign) language as a foundation degree requirement. We strongly recommend transfer students start language before transfer.
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees require 4th semester proficiency in a second language
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees require 2nd semester proficiency in a second language
Students can work with the Disability Resource Center if language presents a substantial barrier, who can recommend a language substitution. If recommended by the DRC, advisors and students can work together to select language substitution courses.
Math - Requirement
All majors in the SBS College have a Math foundations requirement. Math substitutions are not permitted even if recommended by the Disability Resource Center. However, Math requirements do vary based on major:
General Strand majors:
Anthropology (B.A.), Arabic, Creative Writing, English, Environmental Studies, Food Studies, Geography (B.A.), Gender and Women’s Studies, Global Studies, Human Rights Practice, History, Journalism, Judaic Studies, Latin American Studies, Linguistics, Mexican American Studies, Middle Eastern and North African Studies, Philosophy, PPEL, Professional and Technical Writing, Studies of Global Media
For these majors above we recommend: MAT 142 at Pima. MAT 142 is equivalent to MATH 107 at UArizona.
However, these majors will also accept: PHI 120 at Pima. PHI 120 is equivalent to PHIL 110 at UArizona.
Moderate Strand majors:
Care, Health & Society, Communication, Criminal Justice Studies, Geographic Information Systems Technology, Geography (B.S.) Political Science, Public Affairs, Sociology, Urban and Regional Development.
For these majors above we recommend: MAT 142 at Pima. MAT 142 is equivalent to MATH 107 at UArizona. , However, students should look at the sample transfer plans below to understand the specific math and major requirements for their desired major. Some of these majors may also require a statistics and/or research methods course.
Notable higher Math requirements:
Law B.A. - For this major we recommend: MAT 151 at Pima. MAT 151 is equivalent to MATH 112 at UArizona.
Anthropology B.S. (Human Biology Emphasis) - For this major we recommend: MAT 212 at Pima. MAT 212 is equivalent to MATH 113 at UArizona.
Anthropology B.S. (Archaeology Emphasis) - For this major we recommend: MAT 220 at Pima. MAT 220 is equivalent to MATH 122A/B at UArizona.
Statistics - Requirement
Many SBS majors have a statistics requirement as part of the major, in addition to the foundations Math. Please review the sample transfer major plans below to see if your major has a statistics requirement.
Majors with a statistics requirement include: Care, Health & Society, Communication, Criminal Justice Studies, Geography (B.S.), Political Science, Public Affairs, Sociology, Urban and Regional Development
SBS Core Series - Requirement (starting Fall 2024)
All students majoring in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) are required to complete 9 units of SBS Core Series classes, starting in Fall 2024 and onwards.
Access a list of SBS Core Series classes and direct equivalencies from Pima Community College.
- These requirements DO NOT have to be completed before transferring to UArizona.
- Some transfer students will complete their SBS Core Series requirements at UArizona, while others may complete these requirements at their local community college.
- The courses listed can fulfill the SBS Core Series requirements at Pima Community College.
-
Students can double-dip SBS Core Series with their general education requirements. However, students CANNOT double-dip these requirements with their SBS major/minor.
Minors
All SBS majors require completion of a minor (typically 18-21 units). Check out SBS College minors. Students can review all UArizona minors as well as minors available in the fully online campus. Some transfer students may need to start minor classes immediately upon transfer and are advised to consider their options before transferring.
