SBS faculty members and deparments can nominate students for several awards each fall and spring semester.

About the Awards

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences sponsors five different recognition awards to celebrate the diverse accomplishments of our out sponsors five different recognition awards to celebrate the diverse accomplishments of our outstanding undergraduates. SBS student awardees are recognized at the fall and spring Convocation Recognition Ceremony and are given a special gift, a certificate, and a $500 award.

Award Categories

SBS Outstanding Senior Award

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences recognizes one outstanding senior graduating from the College. This award is given to our "best all-around" graduating senior with a record of outstanding academic achievement, a history of active citizenship on campus or in the local Tucson community, and demonstrated capacity for leadership. To be eligible, students must be undergraduates graduating at the end of the Fall semester 2019 in a major offered by one of the instructional units within SBS. The award will be presented to the winner at the SBS Convocation Ceremony and the winner will be expected to be the guest student speaker at the ceremony.

Each department may nominate no more than one student for this award.

Eligibility:

  • Record of academic excellence.
  • Record of active citizenship on and/or off campus.
  • Demonstrated capacity for leadership.
  • Must be an undergraduate major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Must be graduating at the end of the Fall semester 2019

SBS Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award

This award recognizes a graduating senior in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences who has demonstrated academic achievement, originality, and creativity in an independent, undergraduate research project. A faculty member must nominate this person.

Each department may nominate no more than one student for this award.

Eligibility:

  • Must be an undergraduate major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Must be graduating at the end of the Fall semester 2019.

This award is by faculty nomination only. To nominate a graduating student for this award, please write a letter explaining why you feel the nominee should receive this award, including a description of the research project and findings as well as the candidate’s ability to engage in original research.

SBS Excellence in Leadership and Community Engagement Award

This award recognizes a graduating senior who has demonstrated exemplary leadership through their involvement on and off campus and their impact on the lives of others.  Faculty or staff may nominate candidates for this award.

Each department may nominate no more than one student for this award.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated community engagement through involvement in student and community clubs and organizations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills (i.e., holds leadership positions in UA and community organizations/clubs).
  • Demonstrated community.
  • Must be an undergraduate major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Must be graduating at the end of the Fall semester 2019.

To nominate a graduating student for this award, please write a letter explaining why you feel the nominee should receive this award, including a description of the candidate’s community impact.

SBS Perseverance Award

This award recognizes a graduating senior in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences who has persevered in the face of significant adverse circumstances to earn his or her university degree. Faculty or staff are encouraged to nominate students they feel meet the criteria.

Each department may nominate no more than one student for this award.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated ability to persevere academically in the face of adversity.
  • Must be an undergraduate major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  •  Must be graduating at the end of the Fall semester 2019.

As the circumstances of the nomination are of a personal nature, please obtain the nominee’s approval prior to submitting the nomination packet. To nominate a graduating student for this award, please write a letter explaining why you feel the nominee should receive this award.  Please include specific details and examples of the adversities the nominee has overcome.

SBS Student Success Award

This award is given to a graduating senior who is a first-generation college student.  Faculty or staff are encouraged to nominate students they feel meet the criteria.

Each department may nominate no more than one student for this award.

Eligibility:

  • First member of family to graduate from college.
  • Must be an undergraduate major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Must be graduating at the end of the Fall semester 2019.

To nominate a graduating student for this award, please write a letter explaining why you feel the nominee should receive this award. Please include specific details of this student’s academic growth.

Nomination Process

After a department has determined student nominees for each award, nominations can be completed through Wisehub

In order to meet the November 1 deadline, you will want to communicate with your student nominees in advance of the submission deadline to make sure they can provide their materials by the deadline. We require a student CV/resume for all five awards, and for the research award, a brief 500-word research summary.

As part of the nomination, you will need to incude the student's:

  • first and last name
  • ID number
  • email address
  • phone number
  • major
  • cumulative GPA
  • major GPA

After which, you will be prompted to select the student for one or more of the five awards.  

Nominate Student

Nominee’s Submission of Materials

To submit the “additional nomination materials,” the department has two options:

  1. Collect the materials from the student and upload the document(s) themselves.
  2. Ask the student to submit their own materials by using the “Do you want to add a student nominee to this submission?” function. This allows the student nominee to upload the document(s) to the award nomination form.

In order to have the student submit their own materials, please follow these instructions:

  1. In the “Do you want to add a student nominee to this submission?”  box,  type the student nominee name until it appears in the “name” field. Then click “Send Email.”
     
  2. After the rest of the form is complete and you have uploaded your “nomination letter,” click “Save Draft” to save your nomination. Please note that you cannot submit your nomination until all required documents are uploaded by either you or the student.
     
  3. Once the student uploads their documents, they will click “Notify.” You will receive an email that the student has uploaded their documents with a “View Submission” link to your nomination form.
     
  4. You can review the student submission material and click “Submit” to complete the process and submit your nomination.
