Q&A: Caroline Mattos '26, on Self-Discovery, Taking Chances, and Betting on Yourself
Caroline Mattos, a senior majoring in political science with minors in journalism and public relations, spent her final year working with the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences as a student intern on the MarComm team. A member of Alpha Chi Omega, she is combining her interests in political science and communications as she prepares to apply to law school.
In this Q&A, Caroline shares what she’ll miss about the University of Arizona, along with some of the lessons that shaped her time here, from taking chances on new opportunities to learning more about herself along the way. This milestone is especially meaningful as she will be graduating alongside her father, who earned his online Master of Healthcare Management from the Eller College of Management—a parallel experience that reflects the mindset at the core of her reflections: bet on yourself.
What will you miss the most about Tucson and being on campus?
I will miss the environment the most. Tucson is unlike anywhere I have ever visited. The saguaros, the palm trees, the sunshine, all the desert creatures—everything is so beautifully unique. I will miss being able to go on adventures, hiking and exploring the desert whenever I want to. As for campus, I will miss watching the sunsets on the mall.

What is something unexpected you discovered about yourself during college?
I discovered that I actually enjoy spending time alone and doing random things by myself. Before college, I never would have done that, but now I really appreciate having time to explore, go on walks or just do things independently. Enjoying your own company is so important.
What’s a risk you took here that paid off or taught you something important?
Applying to be part of the marketing and communications team was definitely a risk for me. I applied for the internship not thinking I would get it, but I did, and it ended up making my senior year even better. It taught me a lot about professional relationships, office dynamics and how much I enjoy storytelling and communications work. Being on the MarComm team has truly been an incredible opportunity and one of the most rewarding parts of my college experience.
What advice would you give to incoming students who feel unsure or out of place?
You belong in every room you walk into. You should not feel out of place or nervous because everyone else is feeling the same way, even if it does not look like it. My advice would be to take chances and put yourself out there. Apply for that random job, club or internship, even if you do not think you will get it. College is full of opportunities, and some of the best experiences come from things you almost talked yourself out of trying.
What’s next for you after graduation — at least for the near future?
Right now, I am applying to law schools and waiting to hear back. After graduation, I am driving across the country from Arizona to Ohio with my mom and my cat, Wally, which I am really excited about. My main focus for the near future is learning how to be an adult and adapt to post-grad life.
